Hat's off, Zack! Excellent! Great way with words. You put it out clearly. That gap is where we live, and we have to learn to navigate between internal and external worlds. Before I was interested in art, that dance was learned from the world, within, and without. Now that I consider myself an artist, I spend time shuffling between both worlds a lot more often, and stopping to look at everything with two different perspectives, the usual one, and the artistic one that's full of imagination. A line doesn't mean what it used to anymore. It is full of possibilities, and it surrounds us.
I'd like to thank you for describing this situation so well. It's has helped validate this new perspective I have.
Talking about perspective, in my short experience as a self-taught art student, I can summarize this as a grand experiment. (You know I like experiments!) I see myself doing this at various scales, but you took on a whopper, and you reaped the benefit of the experience, enhanced by comments from your peers (I hope you got a lot of them other than here).
I think you are right in your self analysis, but I would say its not as "bad" as you think (of course, I put quotes on "bad" to make sure you understand it is relative, because it is a good thing that you see all that in your piece). If it was me creating this great piece, I'd be delighted to have found where to focus my next efforts, and I'm glad you have them down pat. I would dream of creating something like this.
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, and this part of your artistic journey. I can really appreciate the benefits. In my book, a masterful endeavour.
(How fancy can words get when one is inspired eh?) - so I say... Hey .. its awesome!

Hat is off, my friend. Like told previously, you have done your homework (comes with your theatrical background). I add, the story-chops are evident! Serious writer skills, my friend! It will be great to watch creations sprout.

Wow Zach, Even one Graphic Novel can be a burdensome task but 5! Like Josh, Jerzy & Mark mentioned in the party time on Graphic novels I think episode 23 it can be a real marathon effort with little feedback or immediate gratification or sense accomplishment.
I'm not being discouraging all, I applaud you, but like they mention it is tough. I'm thinking that to live through this with others engaged in the process is what will help us stay committed.
You and I have the same mix of predispositions going for us, Art & Drama. I can't wait to see how this all plays out. The Time Traveler's Tale sounds intriguing. I'm looking forward to egg you on. I'm gonna need a bit of that egg myself. :o)
Great post, your doing your home work.

Some useful ideas here as I embark on my 1st comic. I like the idea that each scene should essentially be it's own "mini-story" with it's own motivation, action, and consequence. These mini-stories should never distract from the larger story...together they ARE the larger story. Maybe it's something I should have realized before, but approaching my book as small chunks of story rather than an overwhelming whole has just made it seem a little easier to actually finish...thanks.

And speaking of overwheming, good luck with The Traveller's Tale. I look forward to watching it progress!

Some great insights, Zach. Wouldn't it be great if everybody realized how deep the comic world can get? Excellent writing. You've got a reader here, fer sure.

And our parents thought we were just wasting our time and allowances on stupid old Comic books. :o)
Just Shows to go ya how important the creative aspect of live is. That we can, through such stories
Built up as allegory through Metaphor, address such deep human issues as these... just blows me away.
That's what makes our chosen avenue of expression so exciting! The artist & authors lead us to places where
we can glean more than just the superficial "WoW" of the page. Great Post Zach!

A nice unboxing of the character! This is exactly the kind of thing I like to do with my favorite characters as a means to finding strategies to creating my own. By figuring out what the symbols mean in a character and what ideas the authors were able to express through them, you can apply similar techniques to express the ideas you're interested in exploring in your own stories.

Your post is a good example of why I think cartoonists are often the best people to talk with at parties.
